daVinci Pyeloplasty Print

Also known as robotic pyeloplasty, or robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty.  This method is rapidly becoming the standard of care by roboticists world-wide.  The virtue of the robotic approach is the added finesse brought to the reconstructive aspect. While there are no additional quantifiable benefits to the patient over standard laparoscopic pyeloplasty, the robot is an essential tool for surgeons without adequate laparoscopic suturing skills.  Dr. Kaynan, however, is capable of performing this laparoscopic reconstructive surgery with or without a robot.  The robotic approach elaborates all of the typical benefits of laparoscopic surgery compared with open methods:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Smaller scars
  • Fewer wound infections and other complications
  • Earlier return to activities of daily living, including driving

The success rates with the robotic approach match the success rates noted with open and standard laparoscopic methods to dismembered pyeloplasty - 92% in adults.  The complication profile is the same.

As in other spheres of surgery, the greater the experience and skill set of the surgeon, the greater the flexibility in approaching tough anatomical problems, the more likely the patient is going to have a favorable outcome.  Remember, you are not just choosing a treatment method, you are choosing a doctor.  The assets count!
